What is it about rainbows that captivates us? No matter our age or mood, we’re instantly awed when we look up and see those vibrant colors arching across the sky. A few days ago, I was sitting at my desk when I noticed a “rainbow” extending from the floor onto the door. Despite being in the middle of work, I immediately stood to find its source.
I guess you could say that chasing rainbows and sunsets is my kink. No matter where I am or what I’m doing, I’ll stop everything to drive or walk to the least obstructed view possible. As Floridians, many of you understand and hopefully appreciate those magical moments when you see one stretch across your favorite beach.
Have you ever noticed that if you pause to look around during these moments, you’re not alone? People of all ages, backgrounds, and sizes stand captivated—a beautifully diverse group sharing a collective experience. In that moment of wonder, our differences fade away as we connect through shared appreciation.
It’s remarkably similar to pleasure—whether experienced through our own exploration or after breaking through communication barriers with a partner. When we can express matter-of-factly what we need to rise to the occasion, we create our own version of that rainbow moment.
This brings us to the importance of exploration—like driving to chase a rainbow. When we embrace the freedom to explore our sexual preferences and positions, our chances of satisfaction increase exponentially. Just as a rainbow requires the perfect combination of light and water droplets to appear, our pleasure often depends on discovering the right elements that work together to create something beautiful.
As we celebrate National Find a Rainbow Day on April 3rd and reflect on the Day of (No) Silence on April 4th, consider how breaking communication barriers around pleasure creates space for authentic connection. And remember International Asexuality Day on April 6th, honoring the spectrum of how people experience attraction and intimacy—a rainbow of possibilities, all valid and worth celebrating.
What’s your rainbow? What combination of elements creates those perfect moments of pleasure and connection for you? The journey to find out is part of the magic.
