When my grandmother passed away, we found ourselves sorting through her things, as you do. Among her keepsakes in the nightstand, we came across an interesting combination: one vibrator, one dildo, a pistol, and her Bible—all cozily nestled together. Were we shocked? Not really.
Did we laugh?
Oh, absolutely!
It wasn’t until recently that I began to wonder where exactly she got those intimate items. My grandfather had been gone for over 20 years, and in the tiny town where they lived, the idea of a toy store was as likely as finding a unicorn. But then I remembered the senior catalogs she used to get. You know the ones: full of comfy slippers, muumuus, walkers, and compression socks. One day, as we were flipping through them together, I noticed something interesting tucked away in the back pages—massagers.
Fast forward to today, and as I sat down to write this blog post, reflecting on our September theme, “Sexy Seniors,” I found myself going down a delightful rabbit hole. It turns out that many of those catalogs now offer an expanded range of sexual health and wellness products. Who knew?
What’s even more fascinating is that big-name brands are also getting in on the action, marketing furniture and other products geared towards seniors, cleverly disguised under different names. What does all this tell us? Not only are seniors still very much in the game, but they’re also more comfortable expressing their desires and needs.
The taboo is fading, and it’s about time.
